Simon Hughes is new Lib Dem Deputy Leader

Simon Hughes, 8 term MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, has won the contest to be deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats beating Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.

Mr Hughes replaces Vince Cable, who stood down from the deputy leadership role last month to concentrate on the job of business secretary in the new Liberal Democrat-Conservative Coalition Government.

He said he would ensure the Lib Dems "seize the moment" provided by the coalition government.

    Mr. Hughes,

It seems you are the only one still left with the Lib-Dem values in tact. That is why I am writing this note with my suggestion to you who might give some sympathetic consideration to it.

I sympathize with the government views that those who are on the benefit should try to get work in this economic climate. As you know some people's benefit incomes are greater than their income that would have been if they were employed. I can see in this circumstance they have no incentive, though they are willing to work. Couldn't government make up the difference from their benefit entitlement on a mark-time basis until their total remuneration from the employment equals/exceeds their benefit income? This principle may apply even to those who are not working and living on the benefits. This way we could also monitor who are the rogue employers cheating the minimum wage regulations.
